Ocular Coherence Tomography

At Paul Harries Opticians we have invested in the Zeiss Cirrus HD-OCT, Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) because we believe in using the best, most up-to-date technology to help detect eye conditions as early as possible.

The Zeiss Cirrus HD-OCT, is a non-invasive technology used for imaging the retina – the multi-layered sensory tissue lining the back of the eye. The Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) scanner was the first instrument to allow eye care professionals to see cross-sectional images of the retina. The test is very simple, takes just a few seconds and is completely non contact; there are no sudden puffs of air or flashes of light.  Any areas that are unusual can then be measures and later repeat scans can be lined up with the original and any changes can be seen and measured. The retina can be damaged by many common conditions such as Glaucoma, Diabetes and Age Related Macula Degeneration. The latest  high-definition scanning technology has revolutionised the way we image and diagnose macula problems such as differentiating dry macula degeneration from wet macula degeneration, assessing macula holes, epiretinal membranes and other macula conditions. It also allows us to check for swelling of the retina and loss of the retinal nerve fibre layer that occurs in Glaucoma.
